What Is CPO® Certification?

The Certified Pool and Spa Pool Operator Certification (or CPO Certification) is a training program recognized by the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA). The certification provides you with everything you need to safely operate and manage a swimming pool, spa, or aquatic facility.

In fact, local laws in many states and provinces require CPO Certification for public or commercial pool operators. This means that all semi-public or public swimming pools and/or aquatic facilities have a CPO Certified operator on site in order to make sure that all codes, regulations, and safety standards are being met.

Now that you understand what CPO Certification is, let's look at how you can become certified.

How Can I Get CPO Certified?

There are multiple ways for someone to become a Certified Pool/Spa Operator!

CPO training includes both online and in-person formats:

  • Online CPO Courses: The online CPO course is flexible, requiring 6-8 hours of self-paced study with a 1-day Zoom session, allowing you to learn at your own pace, and includes helpful practice exams to test your knowledge.
  • In-Person CPO Courses: In-person CPO courses include hands-on experience with expert feedback, requiring students to participate in a 2-day, instructor-led class and exam (14-16 hours).

Before you are eligible to take the exam, you must have completed all required modules or training sessions.

With Pool Training Academy's comprehensive training, your path to certification will feel like a breeze with the help of experienced instructors.

Are CPO Courses Led By Certified Instructors?

Yes! Throughout both online and in-person courses, our experienced instructors provide expert support and interactive guidance.

Our instructors have over 40 years of experience in the industry, offering real-world insights while helping guide you to success.

How Long Does a CPO Certification Last?

The CPO Certification is valid for five years before renewal is required.

Renewal must be obtained prior to the expiration of the current certification, though some states require you to renew after three years.

It’s All About Chemical Testing, Chemical Feed, and Maintenance

Chemical testing and maintenance are at the heart of safe and effective pool operations. CPO requirements mandate that Certified Pool Operators master these essential skills to maintain the water quality and safety of public pools and spas.

The CPO certification course is designed to provide pool operators with extensive knowledge of chemical testing procedures, chemical hazards, the proper use of chemical feed systems, and strategies to reduce chemical costs, all in accordance with key safety regulations set by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and other leading industry authorities.

The CPO handbook serves as a valuable resource, offering step-by-step guidance on chemical testing, maintenance routines, and the safe operation of chemical feed systems.

Chemical Testing Procedures

Through the comprehensive CPO training program, participants learn the importance of regular chemical testing—monitoring pH, chlorine, and other critical water chemistry parameters—to ensure a healthy aquatic environment. The course also covers how to identify and mitigate chemical hazards, such as improper storage or handling of pool chemicals, which can lead to serious safety incidents, including diving accidents.

Maintenance Routines

In addition to chemical testing, the CPO certification program teaches water chemistry management that prevents expensive repairs and replacements. The courses delve into related aspects of pool maintenance, such as pool water circulation, filtration systems, spa management, and overall water chemistry.

CPO Certification: Legal Requirements

CPO Certification is legally required in 24 states as well as the District of Columbia currently, but the list of states is constantly growing! It's important to remember that even though your state may not be a CPO Certification required state, you may still need to get a Certified Pool Operator Certification for insurance or corporate reasons.

Pro Tip: It's highly recommended to have a CPO-certified operator at your facility to greatly reduce the risk of injury, death, or legal action resulting from a lack of operational knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions About CPO Certification

Is CPO Certification Required?

CPO Certification is required in 24 US states and the District of Columbia. It is important to note that even though it may not be required in your area by law, it may still be required by your insurance or corporate policy. CPO Certification is also a fantastic route for career advancement as well, potentially leading to higher positions within your company and potential pay increases.

What Does CPO Cover?

CPO stands for Certified Pool & Spa Operator, and the program covers everything you need to successfully operate an aquatic facility. This includes daily operation, chemical addition, testing, record keeping, safety protocols, liability mitigation, cleaning, maintenance, and much more! This program benefits both brand new operators as well as seasoned professionals!

Is the CPO Course Hard?

As long as you give yourself plenty of time and use the resources available during the exam, you should have no problems at all when taking the CPO Certification Course! The program teaches you everything you need to know to be successful on the final exam.

What are CPO Requirements?

In order to receive a CPO Certification, you need to fully complete either an online or in-person CPO Certification Course. The online course consists of 2 parts:

  • Part 1: Completion of the self-paced Pool Operator Primer video series.
  • Part 2: Participation in an instructor-led Zoom course

During the Zoom course, the instructor will go over anything not covered in the videos.

Students can take the CPO exam immediately after the Zoom class, and your instructor will also administer the exam.

Once you pass the exam with a 74% or better, you will receive your CPO Certification. It is valid for 5 years, though some states (like Massachusetts) have mandated that an online certification is only valid and applicable for 3 years.

You can also choose an in-person course where you attend a 2-day seminar in which your instructor guides you through the material and administers the exam at the end of the program.

Is the CPO Exam Hard?

As long as you take good notes, review the material well, listen in class, take the provided practice quizzes, and get good rest, you should do just fine on the final CPO exam!

And if for any reason you don't pass the CPO certification exam, you can retake the test within six months.

Will the CPO Class Help Me Learn More About Pool Maintenance?

Absolutely! The CPO course will help you excel in pool maintenance as well as pool management, including compliance with local health department regulations. CPO Certification is a comprehensive program that teaches you everything you need to know to succeed as an aquatics facility operator.
