Walk into the CPO certification test cool, calm, and collected with our expert tips.
1. Understand What the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Exam Tests
CPO stands for Certified Pool Operator, and the CPO certification exam is recognized worldwide as the most trusted training program for commercial pool and spa operations. The CPO certification program is specifically designed to test your ability to research and solve problems in real-world pool, spa, and aquatic scenarios.
Thankfully, the CPO certification exam is not a daunting test of trivia that requires memorizing complex math formulas, numbers, or obscure pool facts.
The CPO certification exam is designed to assess your practical knowledge of the following:
-
Water Chemistry & Science-Based Techniques: Manage water quality, chemical balance, chemical testing, and chemical feed equipment to prevent accidents and illnesses.
-
Pool Filtration & Circulation Methods: Ensure water sanitization, clarity, and safety during pool maintenance.
-
Safety Standards & Health Code Compliance: Learn key safety regulations in accordance with state and local codes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC), and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC).
The CPO certification test usually includes a combination of practical scenarios and multiple-choice questions.
When you’re working in the field, no one expects you to have every pool chemistry formula or regulation number memorized. What matters is knowing how to use existing resources to find reliable information when necessary. The CPO certification exam reflects this reality. It’s not a test of trivia — it’s a test of resourcefulness.

There are copycat Certified Pool Operator certification courses that aren’t approved in your area (even if they claim to be) and only focus on helping you pass the test and not on responsible pool & spa maintenance techniques (major liability risk).
3. Take Advantage of the Open Book Format of the Certified Pool Operator Exam

You are allowed to use the following tools during the CPO certification test:

5. Learn the Layout of the Pool Operator Handbook
Familiarizing yourself with the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) handbook is another key step in preparing for the CPO certification exam.
This important handbook covers all the essential topics tested on the CPO certification test, covering everything from pool water balance and pool maintenance procedures to pool safety regulations and efficient pool operations.
Get familiar with the following sections of the Pool Operator Handbook:
-
State Regulations
-
Safety Guidelines
-
Pool Chemical Charts

By understanding the importance of each concept and practicing with scenario-based questions, you’ll be well-equipped to handle the multiple-choice questions and demonstrate your ability to manage pool maintenance safely and effectively.
6. Ask Questions During the CPO Class
During your CPO class, make sure to ask questions if you are confused about any of the course content. Whether it’s math, chemical dosages, or equipment operation — ask for clarification right away. Chances are, others in the class have the same question.
You should be able to rely on your CPO certification course instructor as a key resource for CPO certification test prep (this is why choosing a leading CPO certification course is so important).
Professional CPO certification instructors will make sure to not only teach you the required information but will also teach you how to find the information you need to solve problems in real time (and pass the test).

8. Rest & Review the Night Before the CPO Certification Test
While cramming the night before any test is a common inclination, it may actually hinder rather than help your performance on the CPO certification exam.
Research shows that resting and getting a good night’s sleep before a test is far more effective for test performance and memory retention than last-minute cramming. In fact, one study revealed that students who sleep at least 8 hours the night before an exam typically raise their scores by 4.9-7.6 points above those who do not prioritize sleep.
On a 50-question exam, these extra points can make a huge difference.
We’re not suggesting that you skip studying the night before the test, but we do recommend building in some wind-down time into your schedule and prioritizing sleep the night before.
9. Manage Your Time During the CPO Certification Test
You have up to 3 hours to complete the CPO certification exam, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to budget your test time carefully.
When you break it down, 3 hours = 180 minutes, and if you take the same amount of time to answer each question, you’ll have 3.6 minutes to answer each of the 50 questions.
A reliable test strategy is to quickly scan the entire test and then answer the questions that are easy for you first. If you feel yourself spending more than a few minutes flipping through the Pool Operator Handbook or your notes on a single question, plan to circle back. This ensures you nail the questions you are confident in answering to build both your confidence and your test score.
Once you’ve answered the questions you’re confident about, you can go back through and complete the questions that are more difficult.
10. Keep Calm & Breathe During the CPO Certification Exam
When it comes time for the actual CPO certification test, stay calm and take a deep breath — remember, all the answers are in front of you, and there are retake opportunities available if anything goes wrong.
The CPO certification exam is open book and open note, and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. In order to receive your certification, you must correctly answer at least 37 questions, which is equivalent to 74% or better.
Upon successful completion, your CPO certification is valid for five years, although some states require renewal after three years.
In the event you don't pass, there's nothing to worry about. You will simply have to pay a nominal $25 fee and take the exam again during one of our future class dates. PHTA allows for 2 retests after your initial exam.
Remember, the goal of the CPO certification test isn't to trick you or make you fail — it's to ensure compliance, and confirm that you understand how to handle pool maintenance safely and effectively.
