CPO test day checklist for online and classroom formats

What to Expect on CPO Exam Day: In-Person vs. Online Walkthrough

Whether you’re taking the Certified Pool Operator® (CPO) exam in person or online, knowing exactly what to expect will make a huge difference in your confidence and performance. While the exam format is consistent in many ways between in-person and online, there are some important differences in how each is administered.

This guide walks you through both versions of the CPO exam — so you can feel fully prepared, no matter which path you’ve chosen.

The Day Before the Exam (Both Formats)

No matter how you take the exam, your success starts with preparation:

  • Review your notes and materials — especially water chemistry formulas, safety guidelines, and any topics you found tricky during class. If you’re still wondering about overall difficulty, read Is the CPO Exam Hard? What You Need to Know to Pass with Confidence.

  • Check your supplies — make sure you have a calculator (no cell phone or computer calculators), pencils/pens, notebooks, and a clear workspace (for online).

  • Get a good night’s sleep — being well-rested helps with focus, especially for math questions.

  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced meal before testing.

Arriving on Exam Day: In-Person vs. Online

In-Person Exam Day

When you arrive at your testing location:

  1. Check in with the instructor — bring a valid photo ID.

  2. Find your seat — either assigned or chosen.

  3. Receive materials — typically an exam booklet, answer sheet, sometimes a formula sheet. Pool Training Academy provides you with an exclusive Pool Math Workbook containing simplified, easy-to-use formulas as well.

  4. Listen to final instructions — your proctor will explain rules, time limits, and whether the test is open- or closed-book.

Online Exam Day

When testing online, you’ll typically:

  1. Log in to exam software — follow the instructions provided by your instructor or training provider.

  2. Verify your identity — often via a digital check-in or webcam photo.

  3. Check your tech — stable internet, functioning webcam (cell phone video streaming may also be allowed), and any required browser or software.

  4. Receive instructions on navigation — how to move between questions, submit answers, and access reference materials.

Pro Tip: For online exams, close all unnecessary browser tabs and silence notifications to avoid distractions.

  • 50 multiple-choice questions

  • 2.5-3 hour time limit (most students finish in 1–2 hours)
